UCCKC Shortlisted for Most Improved Club 2013-2014
Great news , UCC karate Club was among those clubs shortlisted this year for most improved club in UCC. It was a bit of a rush to get our bid in, with Ian and Rory eventually having to jump in at the last minute to be interviewed by the UCC clubs awards panel.
Whether the club wins or not, 2013/2014 has been a fantastic year for UCC karate club.Even being shortlisted is a great achievement given the hectic year we’ve had.
UCCKC has seen a new teacher jump in with the beginners, allowing us to run dedicated beginner, intermediate and senior classes for the first time in ages. We’ve also spearheaded the organisation and running of UCC’s self defence course, coordinating with the Tae Kwon do club and UCC Martial Arts Exec. Again working with the UCC Tae Kwon Do club, our club has co-organised and co-hosted the UCC Open Martial Arts Tournament. This event was an awesome success, with kickboxing, karate and Taekwondo styles battling it out under compromise rules. the social afterwards was thoroughly enjoyed as well!! We’ve also been working hard to develop partnerships outside UCC, most recently linking up with WTKO Cork to co-host Sensei Scott Langley in Cork in the facilities of the National Maritime College of Ireland.
Our membership has also expanded, with up to 25 members training on and off when their hectic class and exam schedules allow. The club has successfully navigated the onset of semesterisation in UCC with minimal disturbance, and have learned some valuable scheduling lessons for next year.
Everybody did their club proud this year with their medal haul at the All-Ireland intervarsities in GMIT. The club gained 17 medals in all across all classes, a solid improvement on recent years, and we hope a sign of times to come as our beginners progress. Positions for next years committee are now up for grabs, and with a last course being organised on the 19th April with Sensei Scott Langley, the year still has a few last opportunities and socials left before the summer recess. Training will be continuing over the month off whilst the halls are still available. Keep your eyes on the facebook page where any changes to this plan will be posted.
